As badly as YouTube plays video (with the sound way out of sync), I don't think that's a compelling reason by itself. If there's no content there, it's bad, whether YouTube or something text-based.

If the videos that people linked to were on another site, would that make it better? Or is it that you just don't like videos as the subject of posts? Or more likely, is it that you don't like bad/boring videos as the subject of posts (the number of which has been increased by the existance of YouTube), which really means that the problem is not about YouTube but, as ever, about bad posts?

I'm all for it bugbread. I remember a time when a great deal of people were asking for a MetaFilter vacation, so that when it came back people had a renewed sense of what MeFi was all about and brought good stuff to the table.

Seconded, but it's not going to happen. Bar's way too low for YouTube links on the front page, and is only going to stay there (or go even lower) as time goes on. Best to learn to skip them.

I would be much happier if YouTube posts contained some information about what they will be beyond a cryptic title ("Kelly likes shoes" is an egregious example). Is it going to be a video blog? A commercial? A music video? A comedy skit? A news item? A TV show? An amusing home video? A tedious home video?
Something else?
Armed with this kind of information, we can decide whether it's worth 2-10 minutes of our time to watch. Without it, we have 2-10 minutes of our lives stolen whilst we find out what it is, and become irritable and snarky as a result.

Combine the automatic conversion of all video formats to a single universal one, and the tipped point of most people having high speed access, like it or not, Youtube and Google Video are the current soup de jour of the internet. Might as well curse the rain for getting you wet.
When they perfect high speed olfactory transmissions via the web, you can expect the front page to be linking to 600 kinds of ass smells.

Adding to what crunchland said, youtube and Google video do provide a good service by making video bandwidth free to the creator/uploader for the first time.
I think video has been held back online due to bandwidth constraints, especially anything linked on a popular site would either crash a server or result in a thousand dollar bandwidth bill.
So now, video's free and unencumbered and linked heavily on blogs, including this one. I do wish people were more descriptive and I do wish only the best of the best was posted, but maybe I'll force myself to watch them all and pull the esp. dumb ones, but in the meantime, passing over youtube links might be the answer.

I do agree with nowonmai that you should, you know, tell us what we're about to watch. Because if the whole link depends on the surprise of whatever the hell it is, then it's probably not that great as a standalone post. Not everyone likes "what the hell is it? what am I watching?" as the premise of a post. Sometimes it's nice to watch something random unfold, but I can see how that would get annoying several times a week.

Maybe it's along the lines of YouTube:Internet::AVI:OS X? That is, "YouTube pretty much is video for the internet. AVI pretty much is video for OS X. Putting a moratorium on YouTube on an internet site is like putting a moratorium on AVI on OS X"?

I find I have to manually install various different audio and video codecs to get Windows AVIs to work on Macs. Just my experience, but it was only meant in a joking manner, in any case.

There really needs to be some sort of a consensus worked out on what exactly constitutes a good video link. As things go now, the bar is way lower for them then for any other "text based" links. I mean, if I linked to some girl's blog about how her day went, people would bitch and moan to no end and the link would be deleted. But if I link to a video of a girl lipsynking to some stupid pop song, people mark it as a favorite. It almost looks like that the reading is the bothersome part. We'll put up with lousy, repetitive, shallow, old links as long as we don't have to read.

Also, what's next? Flickr has a whole bunch of photos, and some of them are pretty decent. It also has a pretty robust server, so should be start linking to what we like there as well? And if not, why?

c13, there are twice as many posts with the flickr tag vs. the youtube tag, but you're missing my point entirely.
I'm just saying that youtube lowers the bar for everyone, and that's a good thing for people that couldn't afford to put video online for free until now.
Apart from that and mostly unrelated is the opinion that forms around youtube posts here. I think people have always gone "meh" and "this sucks" to most posts, it's just that youtube is kind of a scapegoat because often you have to watch a minute or two to realize it sucks instead of a quick glance at a page, and you feel more ripped off for having invested the time in a dumb video.
I don't watch half the videos here because I have work to do and sitting passively watching video all day seems to waste too much time. But I'll always watch the flag queue and so far, not too many youtube links get reported.

But that's not my point. It looks like internet video is becoming more and more widespread. We didn't have to worry about it before that much simpliy because there wasn't all that much to link to. But things are changing. Is MetaFilter going to become a YouTube filter as well? If so, under what criteria?

Well, maybe you're right, bugbread. I personally don't have anything against YouTube or Flickr or Google video. I go there myself pretty often. It just seems like MetaFilter makes for a lousy TV Guide, the proportion of bad and good videos seems to stay the same as on the original site, but the total number in the set goes down.

I think getting upset about Youtube and Google Video links is an exercise in point-missing, really.
Look at it this way. Basically, these services solve two problems:
1. Hosting video requires crazy amounts of bandwidth.
2. Posting videos in avi/mov/mpeg/whatever will always result in someone complaining that they're trying to view it on a Mac/Linux/a hamster/whatever and it doesn't work.
So, all of a sudden, you've got free hosting for videos, and the software issues have been solved by doing it in Flash. Great. But why complain about linking to it? It makes no sense to judge something as bad because of where it's hosted. Anyone can upload a video to Youtube, and they're just as different from one another as the average website is from another.
Or, the short version: Thinking rationally, why on earth should a link to a photo gallery of some guy deep-frying a burger be considered superior to a Youtube video of some guy deep-frying a burger? It's the same damn thing.
If I was mathowie, I'd write some little bit of code that would automatically expand Youtube and Google Video links into the embedded Flash players, right there on the front page. So, you know, you should be thankful that I'm not.

When I was young, all we had were BASIC programs on PET computers where you could sort of make an ASCII rocketship look like it was blastin off. And all compuer-related acronyms were was written in ALL CAPS.
I like the YouTibe links. Some of them this week have been brilliant (Stevie Wonder on Sesame Street; I mean, c'mon, brilliant!), and none of these complaints have been about comment -- just the fact that it's YouTube that's getting linked to.

Any jackass who would think to post to MetaTalk knows that there have been umpteen callouts of this ilk recently and none has resounded in a "yes - the ban is in effect" decision. So many of Metafilter's problems would be solved if people realized that they don't have to click on every link, nor are they obligated to sit through the entirety of every YouTube video linked here. So many of Metafilter's problems would be solved if people realized that they don't have to click on every link, nor are they obligated to sit through the entirety of every YouTube video linked here. Can we get a moratorium on blogspot posts here? I understand it's just one of many mediums for blogs, but because so many blogspot blogs suck a dong, I am prejudiced against that site. Of course if I thought about it, I'd understand that most blogs suck a dong no matter what is used to create them (wordpress, blogger, blogspot, livejournal, myspace), but I don't want to think about it. I just want to bitch about a medium because I've become conceptually biased to hate it regardless of the content therein.
In fact, can we get a moratorium on any posts that were created using the google search engine to find a gaggle of links? I think google might be trying to bring about the end of the world, and I also wanted to say google and gaggle in the same sentence (oh my I've done it twice now). As a tool for finding things, google worships satan so I think that only posts formed by using yahoo or ask searches should be allowed.
Also, I would like a moratorium on comments posted using Internet Explorer. The browser sucks and is riddled with security holes, and I'm sickened by the fact that you actually let people post comments to this site using that pile.
Finally, while it's unrelated to the web, I would also like a moratorium on any programming Dish Network transmits. While I understand that an episode of Deadwood is the same whether I'm watching it via Dish Network, DirecTV or whatever my local Cable Television Monopoly(tm) is called, I just hate Dish Network because I heard they eat babies, so I think we shouldn't allow people to watch any video that is received via Dish Network satellites.

MegoSteve, this usually is my argument as well. However, the reverse one is that this site is supposed to be better than Fark, for example, a site where there are also some good links every now and then, but they are few and far between, and you have to skip a whole lot more shit links just to get to the good ones. Its the "Filter" part that is the key.
Of course I haven't been able to resolve these arguments just like anyone else here...

Not to create more work for Matt but maybe if a sentence were added to the Post a Link page suggesting that users refrain from posting YouTube/Google Video links without context, that might make posters think twice. I'm sure it's covered in the posting guidelines page but having it explicitly spelled out could have a stronger effect.

Yeah, that's one approach, but if you haven't found something kickass, staying off the blue is the better valour. I think it was somewhere in a FAQ, interview, comment, or the like from mathowie where he said the best posts come from serendipitously finding something. It's not like everyone has a pocket full of kickass links but prefers to post complaints instead. Some folks just avoid posting the shitty stuff that they know about, and would prefer others to have the same tact.

I've tended to air more on the side of caution with FPPs, in that I'll see a number of somewhat interesting links throughout the day, and more often than not, they appear here later.
The biggest problem we currently have is that no matter what the FPP, one of the first 5 comments will be pure snark.
"So?"
"This sucks."
"This was interesting when I saw it last year."
etc etc.

I thought the informally enforced "Flash Friday" was a pretty successful solution at the time; I wouldn't push the YouTube links onto Tuesday (no matter how good the name sounds), it's always better to do the frivolous stuff on Friday... Hmmm. FRIVOLOUS FRIDAY. And then try to nudge all the newspaper/magazine article links to the weekend, when we have more time to read; call it The Sunday Paperless.
But most importantly, make sure that YouTube and other Video links are clearly labeled, both on the original post and in the tags. Maybe we need a flag for "MISLABELED" or just "POORLY LABELED"...
But this far into the thread, nobody's paying any attention, right?

i am a big hater of youtube links, mostly because all the crap there gets posted. regardless, i want no bans. rigid rules and bans and all that crap are worse than the crap we endure from youtube. i would prefer a bit of judgement on the part of the rubes posting all that youtube garbage. there is good stuff there, stick to that, just like the rest of the internets.

I was annoyed to see yet another person complaining about all the YouTube links. However annoying all of you whiners think the youtube posts are, I promise you that your endless bitching is much more harmful to MetaFilter.
